Acquiring the right digital marketing skills can set you up to be successful in any and every business venture you pursue.

Digital marketing is one of those categories that every successful business owner and entrepreneur must embrace and understand. And while you don’t have to be an expert, acquiring the right digital marketing skills can set you up to be successful in any and every business venture you pursue. The only question is, where do you start?

5 Digital Marketing Skills to Learn in 2020

The specifics of digital marketing are constantly changing, evolving, and fluctuating. One tactic might be considered cutting-edge today, yet obsolete tomorrow. So rather than fixate on trends, you’re better off arming yourself with fundamental techniques and core skills that are proven to work regardless of when or where.

With that being said, here are 5 digital marketing skills to learn in 2020:

1. Copywriting

Content is king. To win with marketing, you must have some decent copywriting skills. This includes the ability to craft compelling copy for a variety of digital mediums, including blogs, landing pages, email newsletters, paid advertisements, and social media.

Copywriting is all about communicating in a way that moves people to action. You must be able to capture attention and inspire action within the confines of limited time and space. Good copywriting is both concise and persuasive.

2. SEO

For better or worse, search engines like Google are the gatekeepers of the online world. If you’re going to enhance your digital marketing skills in today’s environment, you need to add search engine optimization (SEO) to your mix of skills.

The good news is that you don’t necessarily need a technical understanding of the ins and outs of SEO. Rather, you’ll benefit more by understanding how to meld SEO and copywriting so that you’re generating content that both search engines and human users can understand.

3. Graphic Design

Not everyone has a natural bent to graphic design, but it’s certainly helpful to acquire some basic skills underneath this heading. Content marketing is now overwhelmingly visual in nature. (Video and graphics grab most of the attention on social media.) So having this skill in your arsenal is certainly helpful.

The good news is that you don’t have to learn the ins and outs of Photoshop. With simple graphic design tools like Canva, which are incredibly user friendly, anyone can develop aesthetically pleasing designs with a shallow learning curve.

4. WordPress

Drag and drop website builders and other platforms make it easy to design simple websites on the fly, but there’s still something to be said for having a basic understanding of how WordPress works and performs. If nothing else, it increases your flexibility and allows you to do more with your marketing.

5. Email List Building

It could be argued that email is a company’s most powerful asset in modern marketing. But the only way to get the results you need from email is to build a list of engaged subscribers. And this is why email list building makes its way into the shortlist of top digital marketing skills you need to acquire.

It’s Time to Build Your Talent Stack

Scott Adams, the cartoonist behind the popular Dilbert comic strip, has popularized a concept known as “talent stacking.”

“The idea of a talent stack is that you can combine ordinary skills until you have enough of the right kind to be extraordinary,” Adams says.

In other words, you don’t have to be the world’s best copywriter. But if you’re an above-average copywriter with decent graphic design skills and an elementary understanding of how WordPress functions, you can generate better results than someone who only understands how to write a blog post.

So don’t get overwhelmed if you feel like you’re average at marketing. All you need to do is build the right talent stack and the results will follow.

The traditional approach to brand development starts with the brand and then goes after the customer. Unfortunately, this resource-intensive approach often comes across as irrelevant and tone-deaf. The correct approach to brand development is to start with the ideal customer in mind and then develop branding that resonates with the target audience. And the best way to do this is by getting serious about target personas.
